How to Use FileZilla: Complete Beginner's Guide
FileZilla is the most popular free FTP client in the world, used by millions of people to transfer files to and from web servers. This guide walks you through everything from installation to your first file transfer.
Step 1: Download and Install FileZilla
First, download FileZilla for your operating system. Run the installer and follow the setup wizard. On Windows, you can decline any optional bundled offers during installation.
Step 2: Gather Your Server Credentials
To connect to a server, you need four pieces of information from your hosting provider:
- Host — your server address (e.g. ftp.example.com or an IP address)
- Username — your FTP account username
- Password — your FTP account password
- Port — usually 21 for FTP/FTPS, or 22 for SFTP
You can typically find these in your hosting control panel (cPanel, Plesk, etc.) under FTP Accounts.
Step 3: Connect Using Quickconnect
The fastest way to connect is using the Quickconnect bar at the top of the FileZilla window:
- Enter your Host, Username, Password and Port
- Click Quickconnect
- If prompted about an unknown certificate, verify the details and click OK
Once connected, you will see your local files on the left and the remote server files on the right.
Step 4: Transfer Files
Transferring files with FileZilla is intuitive:
- Upload: Drag files from the left panel (local) to the right panel (remote)
- Download: Drag files from the right panel (remote) to the left panel (local)
- You can also double-click a file to transfer it, or right-click and select Upload/Download
The transfer queue at the bottom shows the progress of all ongoing transfers.
Step 5: Save Your Connection with Site Manager
If you connect to the same server regularly, save the connection in the Site Manager:
- Go to File → Site Manager (or press Ctrl+S)
- Click New Site and give it a name
- Fill in Host, Port, Protocol (FTP or SFTP) and your credentials
- Click Connect to save and connect
Next time, just open Site Manager and double-click your saved connection.
FTP vs FTPS vs SFTP: Which Should You Use?
- FTP (Port 21) — unencrypted, fast but insecure. Avoid if possible.
- FTPS (Port 21) — FTP with TLS encryption. Secure and widely supported.
- SFTP (Port 22) — runs over SSH, completely encrypted. Most secure option.
Always use FTPS or SFTP when available. In FileZilla, select the protocol in Site Manager under the "Protocol" dropdown.
Tips for Faster Transfers
- Enable simultaneous transfers (Edit → Settings → Transfers → set Maximum simultaneous transfers to 3-5)
- Use Passive mode if you are behind a NAT router or firewall
- Enable directory comparison (View → Directory Comparison) to quickly see which files have changed
- Use synchronized browsing (Site Manager → Advanced → Enable Synchronized Browsing) to navigate local and remote folders together
