FileZilla Client Features

FileZilla Client handles FTP, FTPS, and SFTP transfers through a single application — no separate tools needed for encrypted connections. The interface is designed around a dual-pane layout: local files on one side, remote server on the other. Everything you need for professional file transfer is included in the free download, with no paid tier or feature lock.

Protocol Support

FileZilla supports the three standard file transfer protocols used in web hosting and server administration. FTP connects to standard servers, FTPS adds TLS encryption to FTP connections for environments that require it, and SFTP operates over SSH for fully encrypted transfers where FTP is not permitted. All three protocols are available out of the box.

  • FTP — standard File Transfer Protocol
  • FTP over TLS (FTPS) — encrypted FTP with SSL/TLS
  • SFTP — SSH File Transfer Protocol for secure transfers

User Interface

  • Tabbed interface supporting multiple simultaneous connections
  • Drag-and-drop file transfers between local and remote panels
  • Configurable file list sorting and directory comparison
  • Synchronized directory browsing
  • Remote file search across entire server

Transfer Management

FileZilla processes file transfers through a queue system that persists between sessions. If a transfer fails — due to a timeout, connection drop, or server error — FileZilla can resume it from where it stopped. You can set speed limits per connection or globally to avoid saturating your bandwidth during large uploads.

  • Transfer queue with priority management
  • Supports resume and transfer of large files (over 4GB)
  • Configurable transfer speed limits
  • Filename filters to show/hide specific file types

Connection Management

  • Site Manager to organize and save server connections
  • Bookmarks for frequently accessed directories
  • Network configuration wizard
  • Keep-alive to prevent connection timeouts
  • Supports HTTP/1.1, SOCKS5 and FTP proxies

Security

FTPS and SFTP connections in FileZilla are protected by TLS and SSH encryption respectively. The application supports certificate validation, keyfile authentication for SFTP, and stores credentials through the Site Manager. For environments requiring strict certificate control, FileZilla allows pinning server certificates manually.

  • Full encryption support via TLS and SSH
  • Master password protection for saved credentials
  • Public key authentication for SFTP

Platform Support

FileZilla runs identically on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The Windows build supports 64-bit and 32-bit editions. The macOS build has separate native packages for Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) and Intel. The Linux build is available as a tarball compatible with most modern distributions.

FileZilla Client runs natively on Windows, macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon) and Linux. It is available in more than 47 languages.
